What is a cataract?

Cataract Co-ManagementA cataract is a clouding of the natural crystalline lens in the eye.   Throughout our lifetime proteins in the lens break down and clump together thereby causing it to get cloudy. This makes it hard to see through and may also cause difficulty seeing colors. One of the biggest problems is night driving.  Since cataracts cause light to scatter, oncoming headlights can be overwhelming and make it dangerous to drive.

Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are treated with surgery in which the natural lens is removed and replaced by a lens implant.  The surgery has been around for over a century and recent advancements have allowed it to be a very safe and effective surgery.  In fact, it the most commonly performed out-patient surgical procedure in the United States.

These new improvements have allowed cataract patients the possibility to forgo the need of distance vision glasses after surgery. Some patients may also be able to opt for a new premium type of lens that will enable clear vision for reading as well without the need for reading glasses.  The recent advancements in the surgical technique have it allowed to be far less invasive and therefore allowed for a much faster recovery time.
